The Draft is Scary
21 05 2004An open letter to my congress-people, in response to the consideration of a
draft reinstatement in early 2005:
I’m writing to urge you to deny the reinstitution of the draft. I personally
feel that a draft is an illogical and damaging tool. If a war waged by the
United States is truly worth fighting, then the guiding principles that lead to
conflict will drive the people to support it on their own, without being forced
to do so. By forcing the young men and women of the United States to risk their
lives for a cause they do not support, they are only rallied against the nation
created to defend them and their freedoms. By pulling the nation’s students out
of college and into combat, you drastically reduce their chances of ever
finishing their education and becoming the experienced leaders of tomorrow.
The Nation’s capital does not need another monument remembering thousands of
fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, sisters and bothers lost to cause they do not
support. Please vote no.
