House Update
18 06 2004An entry containing an update on the house reconstruction, family matters, etc.
I realize that my neglegence as of late has been a bit unfair to the people that
read here looking for updates on how the house business is going so now, I
present to you *fanfare* The House Update.
Well, it’s been a long 8 months, but things are finally starting to come back
together. After fiddling a little with the floor plan of the upstairs a little
(made the bathroom bigger at the expense of the laundry room and gave the master
bedroom closets at the expense of the guest room) construction is almost over
and finishing has begun.
All of the original moulding for the house was kept and refinished. The
downstairs recieved a new hardwood floor. The kitchen has been remodeled a bit,
seeing a new sink and something we’d never thought we’d have: cabinents.
The biggest changes are in the basement, where the fire started. The basement
has now been divided up into separate rooms for the athletic equipment, TV/Video
games (possibly with the old big screen. iirc, it survived,) storage and
furnace/utilities.
As things are starting to come together, it’s looking more and more like the
house that it used to be, but less and less at the same time. It’s strange for
me, especially, as I’ve been away for so long, to come back now and wander
though the newly plastered and drywalled downstairs then up to the clean, but
messy and not-quite-so-done upstairs. I know that all of this redesigning and
replanning has been hard on Mom, but I also know that she’s seeing it as a
chance to express herself and have a little fun. She seems proud of what she’s
come up with and from what I can see of it in my head, I think it will look
great. Different, but great.
In terms of logistics, we’re just a few weeks away from being home. As I
mentioned, they’ve got most of the painting down on the reconstructed downstairs
and they’re cleaning and priming the upstairs. The appliances, accessories etc
have already been ordered and are waiting for delivery. The floor is to be
finished (sanded and stained) at the beginning of next week when the major
painting is done. As the pros are working, mom’s been working on textured
finishes and the ceilings and they’re looking great.
The official move-in date is July 7. That’s when we lose our condo for good and
return to home-sweet-home. A bit after that, once we’re settled in, we’re hoping
to have a bit of “whew, we’re back” open house and party. (So, end of July-ish.)
I’m hoping to get a chance, before the open house, to put together a scrap book
of before, during, and after shots. I think it will be really interesting for
people to look through, and I think the doing so will help me with the whole
‘closure’ thing. If you’re interested in coming, let me know and I’ll make sure
to keep you informed.
So that’s basically it. Goodnight all.
Well, I’ll certainly try to attend the welcome-home party. Since you’re missing
my Eagle Scout ceremony to move back in, I’ll be sure to wear my full Class-A
uniform, sash, socks and all, to the party.
Otherwise, I can’t wait to see the house. You guys have had to put up with so
much concerning this debacle, you definitely deserve the reward of moving into a
“new” home. I’m sure it’ll be lovely, if your mom’s in charge.
*smooch* I guess if you’re never going to be on AIM this summer, I’ll just send
you messages through this. I’m not a big fan of blogs per se, but I guess I can
make an exception to communicate with you just this one time;-)
